History

How did it start?

MacPhearson Robertson

In 1925, Australian candy maker and philanthropist, Sir MacPherson Robertson, held a croquet "test" between Australia and England. England won, and Robertson presented them with a shield.

MacRobertson Shield

His nickname was "Mac" Robertson, and the tournament became known as the Mac Robertson Shield. Why the name was contracted to the "MacRobertson" is a mystery.

Over the years, different countries have competed for the MacRobertson Shield. In 1963, it was expanded to include the top three countries. In 1993, it was expanded again to the top four countries. It became the Olympics of Association Croquet, and is held every three or four years in one of the competing countries.
